Maja. Instructional video tutorial. Secrets of portrait painting with the professonal artist.
Hi and welcome to my video tutorial. My name is Sergey Gusev, I am a professional full time artist graduaded from the Academy of Fine Arts, Russia, St. Petersburg with a masters degree. In this instructional video I explain how to paint a portrait in oils on canvas. I want to share my experience with you and help you to achieve great results even if you have never been to any art schools or institutes. This tutorial consists of 5 parts, each part represents a new step of the work on the portrait. In every episode I explain what I do, which paints I mix, what medium I use, I show my palette and explain the basic rules of drawing and painting.
Before you begin watching the video I will tell you which supplies you need if you want to paint this portrait following my istructions. First of all you need a canvas stretched on stretcher bars, 55x55 cm, which is 22x22 inches. If you can't find this size you can simply take a 50x40 cm canvas which is 16x20 inches, you can also use a panel or a canvas panel instead.
You also need a grahpite pencil HB or B, I do not suggest softer or harder ones. Do not forget about an eraser.
Of course you need oil paints, the names you'll see on the screen, I use a limitted palette and therefore I suggest to have only 7 colors. You can choose any brand - those basic colors are the same everywhere, I do not want to advertise any brand so it is up to you.
You will also need turpentine, dammar varnish and linseed oil to mix a medium.
Of course you need a few brushes, I used only synthetics, different sizes, mostly flat and 2 thin pointed round brushes, synthetics too. The entire video is almost 6 hours long, so I devote a lot of time to explain how to start and finish every detail of the face and surroundings.
In this film I talk about the light source, anatomy of the head, proportions, tonal values and many other necessary things. I also included a scanned picture of my painting with a high resolution so you will be able to see every brushstroke.
